Journalists, editors and media industry experts gathered in Prague earlier this month for the European Journalism Centre’s News Impact Summit.
Bauer Academy head of journalism Andrew Greaves was among those who made the trip to the Czech capital for the packed programme of panel discussions, break-out sessions and elevator pitches.
The Summit – which was titled The Future of Editorial – featured a range of topics including using open-source information to improve storytelling. Turning to new platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Twitch to reach new audiences and best practices to build and increase the trust of our communities.
The war in Ukraine and the spread of disinformation was also among the main discussion points while breakout sessions looked at creating eco-systems for stories and content and the use of Twitter Spaces to engage audiences through live conversations.
There was also a serious of short ‘elevator pitches’ which saw speakers from across Europe talk about their work and projects.
These included the co-founder of an AI company which is producing automated election stories for the Czech News Agency. A young student who grew her Instagram following from 1,500 to 10,000 in just 24 hours by producing graphic-heavy and youth-orientated news content and a journalist using TikTok to help tackle disinformation, deep fakes and hoaxes.
The Summit was also a fantastic place to network and Andrew is already planning to utilise those contacts made for future sessions with learners across Bauer Academy journalism and media apprenticeships and courses.
Andrew said: “The News Impact Summit is such a brilliant conference because it brings fresh ideas, best practice and new perspectives from across the industry to the forefront.
“It was fascinating to listen to and speak with journalism innovators from across Europe and already we’re incorporating some of the lessons learned from the conference in our journalism programmes at Bauer Academy.
“The European Journalism Centre always puts on a brilliant programme and Prague was no different. As an industry, journalism has to continue moving forward to meet the demands and needs of its audiences and an event like the News Impact Summit is a good place to take stock of where we are and where we need to be.”
